Information of Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925 H L Mencken Willian Jennings Bryan Clarence Darrow Charles Darwin John Scopes Evolution vs. Creationism What can be taught
I believe that religion, generally speaking, has been a curse to mankind - that its modest and greatly overestimated services on the ethical side have been more than overcome by the damage it has done to clear and honest thinking. I believe that no discovery of fact, however trivial, can be wholly useless to the race, and that no trumpeting of falsehood, however virtuous in intent, can be anything but vicious. I believe that all government is evil, in that all government must necessarily make war upon liberty... I believe that the evidence for immortality is no better than the evidence of witches, and deserves no more respect. I believe in the complete freedom of thought and speech... I believe in the capacity of man to conquer his world, and to find out what it is made of, and how it is run. I believe in the reality of progress. I - But the whole thing, after all, may be put very simply. I believe that it is better to tell the truth than to lie. I believe that it is better to be free than to be a slave. And I believe that it is better to know than be ignorant.
William Jennings Bryan was the Democratic Party nominee in 1896, 1900, and 1908. He hated the idea of Darwinism because he was a Presbyterian. He fought in and won many cases banning the teaching of evolution in public schools. He was asked to represent the World Christain Fundamentals Association in the Scopes Monkey Trial, and was asked all kinds of questions about the Bible and questions that had to real answer to make him admit that the Bible didnt answer a lot of questions. He was smarter than the cross examiner about 70% of the time, but the media only focused on the other 30% of the time.
Charles Darwin was an Enlish scientist who developed the well known theory of evolution which greatly opposes the ideas of the Bible. His theory is accepted by most of the scientific community today. He believes that humans have evolved from monkeys over millions of years, and that everything in life has evolved from single cell organisms, created billions of years ago. This completely contradicts what Christians believe, that humans were created by God as well as all of the animals on the earth, and that the earth is only a few thousand years old.
Also an issue in the recent Presidential election was what should be taught in schools and the Republican Candidate's vice president choice, Sarah Palin, voted for creationism taught in schools.
So I think that republicans tend to lead towards the belief of creationism and that being taught in our childrens schools while democrats are more likely to want evolution to be taught.
John Scopes John Scopes was born and raised August 3rd, 1900 in Paducah, Kentucky. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a law degree in 1924. After law school he moved to Dayton, Kentucky to become a high school science teacher. The American Civil liberties Union announced it would challenge the Butler Act in 1925 and Scopes was asked if he would teach evolution to bring about the case. He accepted. The following trial was one of the most important trials of 20th century American history. In the end he was fined $100. However, the verdict was overturned on a technicality. He died October 21st, 1970.
The Scopes Monkey Trial began on July 10, 1925 in Dayton, Tennessee. John T. Scopes, a biology teacher, was charged of teaching evolution which violated the Butler Act. Scopes lost the case. The trial was made infamous by Inherit the Wind.

The supreme court here is the U.S. has ruled the teaching of creationism as science unconstitutional
It has been stated that evolution is somewhat backed up by scientific fact and creationism is solely a persons faith and beliefs
Also an issue in the recent Presidential election was what should be taught in schools and the Republican Candidate's vice president choice, Sarah Palin, voted for creationism taught in schools.
